Blog : From Vision to Production: Building a Connected Manufacturing Environment

Nuttelex Case Study

When Nuttelex began planning its new $50 million manufacturing facility at Rangebank, the objective was not simply to install new equipment.

The company wanted to create a connected manufacturing environment where production systems, quality processes, operational data and automation technologies worked together as one.

Several years earlier, Nuttelex had encountered Foodmach's Line MES platform at an AUSPACK show. The concept challenged traditional thinking about how manufacturing operations could be managed and connected across an entire production facility and helped shape the vision for the new site.

"Our relationship with Foodmach on this project began several years before construction of the Cranbourne West facility, when we first engaged with their Line MES platform. The concept challenged our thinking about how a modern manufacturing operation could be managed and connected."

The Challenge

The new facility combined two fundamentally different manufacturing environments:

  1. UHT production
  2. Spreads production

Each line had unique products, packaging formats, throughput requirements, quality controls and palletising demands.

Nuttelex also wanted a platform that could support future growth while keeping operations simple for production teams.

Achieving this outcome required more than individual machines. It required integrating multiple technologies, suppliers, and control systems into a single manufacturing environment that could deliver consistent, reliable production outcomes.

One Connected System

Foodmach was selected to design, integrate and commission a customer-specific solution that connected production, quality, automation and palletising systems across the facility.

The solution incorporated:

Eleven different interfaces were integrated into a single source of truth designed to simplify operation, improve visibility and support faster decision-making.

The Role of Line MES

A key differentiator of the project was the implementation of Line MES as a facility-wide platform connecting equipment, production data and operational workflows.

The system provides operators with a common interface while enabling recipe-driven production management, production visibility and coordinated control across multiple manufacturing processes.

Importantly, Line MES was integrated with Tetra Pak filling and packaging systems, creating a unified operational environment rather than isolated equipment islands.

This approach simplified interaction with complex production systems while giving Nuttelex greater visibility and control across the operation.

Reducing Complexity

One of the most significant outcomes was the simplification of changeovers and production setup.

Processes that previously required multiple manual steps can now be managed through recipe selection and automated configuration, reducing setup complexity and minimising opportunities for error.

The project also introduced automated quality verification and validation processes designed to improve product integrity and operational confidence while supporting production efficiency.

Production-Ready Outcomes

The Nuttelex project demonstrates the value of taking a systems integration approach to manufacturing projects.

Rather than managing individual vendors, technologies and interfaces independently, Nuttelex partnered with Foodmach to deliver a connected production environment through a single accountable partner.

The resulting system provides:

  • Integrated production visibility
  • Simplified operational workflows
  • Reduced setup complexity
  • Automated quality validation
  • Flexible multi-SKU palletising
  • Scalable manufacturing infrastructure
  • Improved production readiness

Most importantly, the business now has a production environment designed to support future growth while delivering reliable day-to-day performance.

Vertical Startup in Action

For Foodmach, Nuttelex represents more than a successful automation project.

It demonstrates how manufacturers can move beyond standalone equipment purchases to create fully integrated production systems that are designed, validated and commissioned to achieve production-ready outcomes.

By combining systems integration, automation, quality validation and manufacturing intelligence within a single project framework, Foodmach helped Nuttelex transform a long-term vision into an operational reality.

The result is a connected manufacturing environment delivered through one accountable partner, helping Nuttelex achieve stable production faster and creating a platform for future growth.
